Behind The Design | An Interview w/ Kuda

4 QUESTIONS WITH KUDA

Innovative, energetic and the founders of a brand producing sophisticated and sustainably conscious designs, Tommasso and Marco were kind enough to answer a few of our questions about their brand, Kuda. We're happy to welcome Kuda to The Design Part and hope you'll enjoy the interview as well as their timeless and unique creations...

Kuda is a new sophisticated design brand that at the same time takes its roots back to the 1960s. Founded by Marco and I, Kuda stems from our work, mixing and trying to take the best out of our different backgrounds.
Indeed, as I first obtained a Law Degree and trained in Company Law firms, I soon understood that I needed to express my entrepreneurial and creative attitude in a more varied environment than that of law. For these reasons, I decided to move back to my parental workplace, where furniture had been at the very core of my family business from the second half of the 20th Century.
On this path, I made the chance encounter of Marco, a high-school friend of mine, who boasts an industrial design university education, enriched by a deep passion for creative and manual work. With his hands-on approach and the desire to create something on his own as well, he decided to join me and create a brand where to enhance a premium natural material such as solid wood thanks to craftsmanship and artisanal techniques. Hence, by producing sustainable, long-lasting, and conscious products, Marco and I are pursuing our vision to create a brand for the responsible generations to come.

"We think that to create something unique and worth buying, we need to make sure that all our values are not simply respected by our products. Rather, we are sure that the products themselves must transform into a tangible statement of our values"

Our passion for creating interior objects has many different sources.
In my case, I personally think that being born in a family where furniture design has always been daily business, I naturally developed an inclination towards design products, their function, their configurations, and their everyday use. As of Marco, his handy approach mixes with his natural tendency to look for organization and a rational usability of spaces and objects.
Combining such precious inclinations, we want to convey a set of values through the creation of new products destined to furnish our interiors. Specifically, Kuda merges our natural inclination towards the development of new objects with our desire to establish a new wave of products handcrafted with solid woods and finished with natural procedures. What we want is to create and produce things that shall not be replaced soon, but that can be handed over from time to time.

“Almost anywhere” might seem a trivial answer, but, however, that is how it is. Indeed, Marco and I are extremely lucky to have a great tuning in terms of things we like and styles we are naturally attracted by. For instance, we are devoted to the Memphis style as well as to the allure of vintage pieces or industrial products. We try to keep every different influence in mind as we share at every hour of day and night pictures of furniture, interiors, cars, or natural landscapes, that could turn into the lines or the fascination of a new product.
Each one of these inspirations then adapts to the different natural materials that we use, always adjusting to the inner limits of artisanal production or solid woods characteristics, yet trying to create something new and unique.

I think that it comes as no surprise that being a new furniture brand in 2021 is as challenging as ever. We think that to create something unique and worth buying, we need to make sure that all our values are not simply respected by our products. Rather, we are sure that the products themselves must transform into a tangible statement of our values.
When working with designers or with our internal team, we always stress that new products must first comply with the importance we give to solid wood as our leading material and to the beauty which lies in its natural imperfection. At the same time, we make clear that we want every item to reduce the volume of waste and to be finished with eco-sustainable processes. For these reasons, we are constantly looking for new as well as ancient procedures that can preserve the environment and reduce pollution.
